1. Anesthesia Nurse prepares equipment needed for the patient to safely undergo anaesthesia.

checking and setting up the anaesthetic machine

preparing intravenous drugs

preparing intravenous therapy administration equipment

preparing a range of devices to maintain the patient’s airway (e.g. laryngeal masks, endotracheal tube)

communicating with the patient when they arrive into the operating theatre, verifying the pre-operative checklist for allergies, informed consent and past medical history

establish peripheral intravenous access

applying anaesthetic monitoring to help assess the patients’ condition whilst under anesthesia. This may include electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation devices. The monitoring of other parameters such as anaesthesia depth monitors (EEG, bispectral index etc.) may also be necessary

2. During Anesthesia the anesthesia Nurse  role includes assisting with:

inducing and maintaining adequate anaesthesia

establishing and securing an airway

making sure that patients are positioned in such a way not to cause discomfort or injury during their procedure

monitoring patients’ vital signs and anaesthesia depth

temperature monitoring and regulation

collection and analysis of patient (blood) samples

acquiring transfusion fluids and equipment

3.After anesthesia, the Anesthesia Nurse  assists the anesthetist with:

waking the patient

removing airway devices

transferring the patient to the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

handing over patient information to the PACU staff

Dental Nurse (Dental Assistant) (Job Code: P0001/11)

These responsibilities include placement and removal of the rubber dam, placement of temporary dressings, taking alginate impressions for study models, removal of surgical sutures, and removal of excess cement following crown and/or bridge cementation.

The clinical functions performed include;

preparing and dismissing patients;

point of use cleaning of instrumentation and disinfecting equipment;

providing post-operative instructions prescribed by the dentist;

maintaining supply order;

maintaining applicable records, and others as requested by the dentist.

Participates with the dentist in the examination and treatment of patients by retracting cheeks and tissues and by irrigating and aspirating mouth fluids without harm or discomfort to the patient.

Anticipates the dentist’s needs and practices four-handed dentistry to provide efficient operative procedures for the patient or as assigned to a dental surgical operating team.

Performs expanded duty procedures under the supervision of the dentist as required.

Reviews patient’s medical history and alerts the dentist to significant problems, assists in updating the patient’s history; flags the chart to note significant history problems.

Charts accurately the findings of the patient’s oral conditions as reported by the doctor; records the treatment rendered in the patient’s permanent chart.

Maintains and periodically reviews skills learned in First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation;

Instructs patients in post-operative home care procedures as directed by the dentist.

Clinical Duties

• Assessment of care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients in the operating department.
• To work closely with all attending clinical staff in instituting a high standard of patient care and treatment, and maintaining safe practices.
• To establish sound communications between the theatre and all clinical departments within the Hospital.
• To ensure that all equipment in the operating department is handled correctly, maintained in safe working order and to evaluate new equipment for trial purposes.
• To ensure that all the equipment in the operating department is subject to formal maintenance contracts, and that the equipment is maintained and repaired according to the contract schedule.
• To be involved in the implementation and development of quality assurance tools within the department.
• To supervise all the teaching and orientation programmes throughout the department.
• To be kept up-to-date in all new trends in surgery and infection control, and to be a clinical resource in these areas.
• To maintain professional confidentiality and to ensure that all clinical and legal documents are completed and signed accurately and legibly.

Management

• Case scheduling or correctly selecting the day on which to do each elective case.
• To maintain the performance of a multi-disciplinary team by ensuring that all have the skill, knowledge and attitude necessary to ensure a safe clinical environment within all the departments mentioned above.
• To maintain an effective ordering and stock control system for all consumables and drugs used within the departments mentioned above.

• To hold departmental briefing meetings involving staff from other departments where necessary.
• To be familiar with cardiac arrest, Health & Safety, and Fire and evacuation procedures.
• To ensure that there is always a member of the operating team on duty with an Advance Life Support certificate.
• To undertake such other duties that may be required from time to time by the management of the Hospital.
