Job Description:

  1. Performs a systemic initial and ongoing assessment of the patient’s physical and psychosocial status, specific to the stage of pregnancy of the patient (partogram).
  2. Collaborates with the patient/family and other members of the health care team to develop and update a plan of care based on the patient’s changing physical, psychosocial and the stage of pregnancy of the patient.
  3. Established realistic and measurable goals that are culturally sensitive and identifies nursing interventions to achieve the goals.
  4. Plan and organizes patient care activities with regards to her antenatal / postnatal care.
  5. Diagnosing, monitoring and examining women during pregnancy;
  6. Developing, assessing and evaluating individual programmes of care;
  7. Providing full antenatal care, including screening tests in the hospital, community and the home;
  8. Identifying high risk pregnancies and making referrals to doctors and other medical specialists;
  9. Arranging and providing parenting and health education for the woman, her partner and family members;
  10. Encouraging participation of family members in the birth to support the mother and enhance both mother? Baby bonding and family prelateships;
  11. Providing counseling and advice following events such as miscarriage, terminating, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death;
  12. Supervising and assisting mothers in labour, monitoring the condition of the foetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management;
  13. Giving support and advice on the daily care of the baby, including breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds’
  14. Providing advice and guidance on a staff and timely transfer home;
  15. Liaising with agencies and other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care;
  16. Engaging in professional development to meet PREP (post-registration education and practice) requirements;
  17. Participating in the training and supervision of junior colleagues.
  18. Evaluates quality of midwifery care being delivered and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  19. Evaluates on an ongoing basis the patient’s progress and the appropriateness of the plan of care involving the patient/family and other health team members.
  20. Updates the plan of care to reflect patient’s current health status and needs.
  21. Evaluates and documents the patients/family’s understanding of and response to the plan of care including teaching and discharge plans.
  22. Participates in presenting patient care conferences.
  23. Practices within the established standards, policies and procedures.
  24. Recognizes when the patient care needs extend beyond the limits of personal ability and consults appropriate resources.
  25. Assumes responsibility for professional development and maintain currency in nursing for area of practice.
  26. Uses computer technology as required.
  27. Maintains infection control and safety awareness functions accordingly and initiates corrective action when indicated.
  28. Participates in fire and disaster drills and mock codes.
  29. Maintains confidentiality of patient/family information.
  30. Acts as a patient advocate and develop supportive relationship with patient/family maintaining a professional role.
  31. Communicates verbal information in an accurate concise and timely manner.
  32. Documents in a manner that is consistent with the nursing documentation guidelines.
  33. Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with other members of the health care team.
